Muslim Body Demands Apology as UP Students Walk Down Ramp in Burqa

In a Muzaffarnagar college, a group of students caused controversy by walking down the ramp in burqas during a fashion show. This attempt to showcase “unity in diversity” and display their creativity has led to demands for an apology from a Muslim body. The Jamiat Ulama representative argued that the burqa is meant for “purdah” (covering) and not for a fashion show. However, the students defended their choice, stating that they face criticism both when they wear and when they don’t wear their hijabs.

The college has supported the students, with backing from a representative of the Darul Uloom, who described the fashion show as a form of representation. The controversy arose after a video of the event, called Fashion Splash, went viral. The three-day event included students showcasing Western and traditional attire, with a group of students also wearing burqas on the ramp. Notably, former Bollywood and television actors attended the event, which was organized by fashion design students.

The demand for an apology came from the Muslim body, who condemned the incident and emphasized that the burqa is not a fashion item but a symbol of Muslim women’s dignity and honor. They argued that it is worn to protect women from men with malicious intentions. The body called on the college authorities to publicly apologize, warning of legal action if they fail to do so.

On the other hand, the students explained that their aim was to represent different styles of dressing and promote unity in diversity. They stated that the inclusion of burqas was a way to showcase their creativity and ensure that Muslim girls were not left behind. They also highlighted the dual scrutiny they face regarding the hijab, with some questioning when they wear it and others when they don’t. A representative from Darul Uloom supported their initiative, stating that it was a positive opportunity for them.

The college authorities firmly stood by the students, stating that they would have failed in their duty if they had prevented the fashion show. They emphasized that their objective as an educational institution is to provide the best education to all students, regardless of their religion. The event was organized by female fashion design students and aimed to provide them a platform to express their creativity. They emphasized that the students did not offend any religious sentiments and instead celebrated their traditions.

The response from the college authorities and the support from the Darul Uloom representative highlight the importance of freedom of expression and creativity. However, the controversy also underscores the need for sensitivity and understanding when it comes to religious symbols and practices.
