New Study Uncovers Strong Link Between COVID-19 and Surge in Heart Attacks

The recent surge in heart attack deaths during Navratri Garba events in Gujarat has raised concerns about a possible connection between COVID-19 infection and cardiac health. According to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, a COVID-19 infection can impact the artery wall tissue and associated macrophages. This leads to inflammation in the plaques of atherosclerosis, potentially resulting in heart attacks or strokes.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has also highlighted the link between COVID-19 and heart attacks. They recommend that individuals who have experienced a severe bout of the infection should avoid exerting themselves for at least a year or two. This information came to light after at least 10 heart attack deaths were reported at Garba events in Gujarat during Navratri, with the youngest victim being only 17 years old. In response, the state health minister, Rushikesh Patel, called for a meeting with health experts and cardiologists.

Patel referred to the ICMR study and advised individuals who have had a severe COVID-19 infection to refrain from intense physical activities such as hard workouts, running, and strenuous exercises for a certain period, typically one to two years, in order to prevent heart attacks. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also emphasized this recommendation, citing the ICMR report. He urged people to avoid overexertion if they have had a COVID-19 infection in the past one or two years.

Mandaviya also discussed the country’s healthcare system, stating that it follows a holistic and inclusive approach. He mentioned the expansion of healthcare infrastructure and the promotion of traditional systems of medicine as part of the government’s efforts to address the challenges faced during the pandemic.

Overall, the recent heart attack deaths at Navratri Garba events in Gujarat have sparked concerns about the potential connection between COVID-19 infection and increased risk of cardiac issues. Studies conducted by the National Institutes of Health and the ICMR highlight the impact of the virus on artery wall tissue and the importance of avoiding overexertion for individuals who have had a severe COVID-19 infection. The government is taking steps to expand healthcare infrastructure and integrate traditional medicine into the healthcare system.
