Marko Arnautovic , the seasoned striker of the Austrian national football team, had a reason to celebrate on a recent Friday evening. Playing in the Italian Serie A, Arnautovic managed to score his second goal of the season. The 34-year-old footballer managed this feat during the home game of the 25th round of the competition, where his team, the league-leading Inter Milan, was pitted against the team at the bottom of the table, Salernitana.
The goal came in the last action of the game, during injury time, and served as the final point in the match, making the score 4-0 in favor of Inter Milan. This victory helped the Milan-based team increase the point difference between them and their closest pursuers, Juventus Turin. After playing 24 games, Inter Milan now leads Juventus Turin by a ten-point margin.
This victory marked the eighth competitive win in a row for Inter Milan. The team’s triumphant performance was a concerted effort, with Marcus Thuram, Lautaro Martinez, and Denzel Dumfries scoring the initial goals in the 17th, 19th, and 40th minutes, respectively. These goals laid the foundation for their victory even before the half-time break.
Arnautovic entered the field as a substitute for Martinez after an hour into the game. His goal came just before the final whistle, scored from a close-range cross. Prior to this, the attacker had only scored once, in a 1-1 draw with Genoa on December 29, 2023, and once in the Champions League. His recent goal against Salernitana, therefore, marks a high point in his season.
