The National Security Adviser of the Philippines, Eduardo Año, dismissed allegations of a plot to destabilize President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s government, affirming the loyalty of the military and the entire security sector to the commander-in-chief. Año stated that while there were healthy debates and criticism from retired or former military officers regarding certain policies, they were well within the bounds of democratic space. He emphasized that there was no movement against the government, contradicting earlier claims made by military chief Romeo Brawner, who mentioned “destabilization efforts” and calls for the president’s replacement. Año clarified that Brawner had been misquoted or misinterpreted by the media. Año also assured that the security sector would remain vigilant and prepared to counter any threats to national security. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., son of the late Philippine strongman deposed in a 1986 uprising, won the presidential elections last year, but has experienced a significant decline in approval ratings due to rising consumer prices. No immediate response was received from Marcos’ office. The Philippines has witnessed over a dozen coup attempts since the ousting of President Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.
