Stocks Soar, Offering Hope to Investors as Year-End Approaches

Investors are finding optimism as stocks continue to rise, providing a positive outlook for the end of the year. Since late October, the S&P 500 has seen a 9% increase in just 13 trading days.

What is particularly encouraging about this rally is that it is not limited to the popular megacap stocks that have dominated the market this year. Small caps, which are the opposite of megacaps, have also experienced a rally, with a 5% increase on Tuesday and a 10% increase over the same 13-day period.

Interestingly, the farther one ventures into the fringe of the stock market, the better the returns seem to be. Disruption-themed ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) has seen a 26% increase during this period. Additionally, the SPDR S&P Regional Bank ETF (KRE), which suffered a major setback in March, has rebounded impressively with a 16% increase. Other ETFs, such as the cannabis-themed Alternative Harvest ETF (MJ), gambling (BETZ), solar energy (TAN), initial public offerings (IPO), and meme stocks (MEME), have all experienced similar gains.

Even bitcoin, the poster child of cryptocurrencies, has seen an 11% increase, aligning with the major equity indexes.

This rally has caught the attention of Wall Street, especially considering the abysmal performance of hedge funds this year. The Bloomberg All Hedge Fund Index is down 7% while the S&P 500 is up 17%. As a result, macro hedge funds are likely to aggressively pursue market trends in an attempt to generate returns before the year ends.

However, caution is advised for individual investors. While the rally may seem enticing, it’s important to be aware of the risks involved. For example, ARKK is still down over 70% from its 2021 high, and many of its components are still facing significant losses. It would take a considerable rally to reach breakeven levels.

Nevertheless, for disciplined investors who employ prudent risk management, this rally presents an opportunity to take advantage of the momentum and potential gains, as long as expectations are realistic.

It’s worth noting that the success of this rally could be influenced by seasonal tailwinds and the behavior of the bond market. Investors are advised to stay cautious and consider the current market conditions before making any investment decisions.
