The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that head coach Rahul Dravid and his staff will be extended. The contracts of Dravid and his team were set to end after the Cricket World Cup 2023, leading to speculations about a new coach. However, all parties agreed on Dravid’s extension, although the duration of the contract has not been revealed.
Before Dravid signed the new contract, the BCCI approached Ashish Nehra, the coach of the Gujarat Titans, to take on the role of head coach for the national team in the T20 format. Sources have confirmed that Nehra was indeed approached for the position, but he declined the offer due to his commitments with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise.
Nehra had previously stated that he wanted to honor his contract with the Gujarat Titans until 2025, and he has no intentions of becoming the head coach of the national team. At the moment, Nehra does not want to be constantly on the move as being the India coach requires extensive traveling. He is currently focused on his two and a half months of IPL coaching.
However, Nehra may consider becoming a white-ball coach for the national team in the future when the time is right. Meanwhile, the duration of Dravid’s contract remains unknown, but it is believed that he will continue to guide the team until the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024. A decision regarding his association with the national team will likely be made after the event.
Nehra’s current contract with the Gujarat Titans runs until 2025, and the franchise has already lost its captain, Hardik Pandya, to the Mumbai Indians. Therefore, it is understandable that they would not want to lose their highly sought-after coach at this time. Nehra also had no intentions of pushing for a move.
