The mother of the deceased opposition politician was prohibited from viewing her son’s body. The politician in question is the Russian opposition figure, Alexei Navalny, who passed away on Friday.
In Russia, a court is set to preside over a lawsuit filed by Navalny’s mother in March, related to her son’s death.
Ludmila Navalnaya, Navalny’s mother, made a trip to a prison camp in Siberia on Saturday, where her son met his untimely demise. Despite her efforts, she was denied permission to view her deceased son’s body.
Ludmila, in her grief, reached out to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, on Tuesday, requesting that her son’s remains be released to her.
In a heartfelt video message, she implored, “I appeal to you, Vladimir Putin. Let me finally see my son. I demand that his body be handed over immediately so that I can bury him in a humane way.”
However, Putin has yet to respond to her plea or even comment on Navalny’s death.
The court hearing for this case is scheduled for March 4. According to Tass, Russia’s state news agency, the proceedings will be conducted privately.
According to Russian prison officials, Navalny passed away on Friday at the prison camp where he was serving a 19-year sentence. Russian authorities are still investigating his death.
Navalny’s press representative, Count Jarmyš, announced on Youtube on Monday that investigators plan to hold Navalny’s body for a minimum of two weeks for examination.
Navalny’s wife, Yulia Navalny, has pledged to carry on her husband’s work. She holds Putin accountable for her husband’s death. Navalny’s supporters have also accused the authorities of concealing his body to obscure the true cause of his death.
The United Kingdom announced on Wednesday that it will impose sanctions on six Russian officials in response to Navalny’s death. These sanctions target the head of the Siberian prison camp and his five deputies.
All assets held in the UK by the individuals facing sanctions will be frozen. In addition, they will be barred from traveling to the UK.
The UK is the first nation to impose sanctions in the wake of Navalny’s death.
