Santos Retains Congressional Seat with Support from 31 Democrats

A Republican-led effort to remove Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) from Congress was defeated as 31 Democrats joined 182 Republicans in voting to keep him in office. The resolution to expel Santos received a vote of 179-213-19, falling short of the two-thirds threshold required to remove a member of Congress. This marked the second unsuccessful attempt this year to oust Santos, who is facing 23 federal charges. The effort to expel Santos was initiated by a group of freshman New York Republicans, led by Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, in response to his mounting legal battles. Despite his legal troubles, Santos has refused to resign. The list of Democratic House members who voted to keep Santos in Congress includes Reps. Collin Allred, Jake Auchincloss, Ed Case, Emmanuel Cleaver, Henry Cuellar, Sharice Davids, Chris Deluzio, Lizzie Fletcher, Jared Golden, Jim Himes, Steven Horsford, Jeff Jackson, Hank Johnson, Rick Larsen, Susie Lee, Zoe Lofgren, Seth Magaziner, Morgan McGarvey, Rob Menendez, Gwen Moore, Marie Perez, Katie Porter, Jamie Raskin, Dutch Ruppersberger, Brad Schneider, Kim Schrier, Bobby Scott, Elissa Slotkin, Mark Takano, Rashida Tlaib, and Nikema Williams.
