Severe Weather Alert: Cyclone Michaung Approaches, Thunderstorms Expected in 12 Tamil Nadu Districts

The Chennai Meteorological Centre has forecasted moderate thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall in 12 districts of Tamil Nadu today as cyclone Michaung strengthens in the Bay of Bengal. Additionally, the regional weather department has predicted light rain in 11 other districts of the state. The bulletin released by the weather department late on Friday night stated that moderate thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rain are expected in isolated areas of Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, Ramanathapuram, Thiruppur, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Thirunelveli Kanyakumari, and Karaikal districts of Tamil Nadu. It also mentioned that light rain is likely in isolated areas of Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Nilgiris, Theni, and Puducherry in the next three hours. The weather department has issued an advisory highlighting the potential impacts of the weather forecast, including waterlogging, slippery roads, traffic disruptions, and minor damage to unsecured structures. In light of the approaching cyclone, the Indian Meteorological Department has warned of rough sea conditions in coastal areas. The northeast monsoon is intensifying, leading to heavy rainfall in various districts of Tamil Nadu. Precautionary measures, including the evacuation of vulnerable areas, have been instructed by Chief Minister MK Stalin in response to the IMD’s cyclone prediction.
