Shahid Afridi warns against overconfidence: India’s World Cup Final loss to Australia

Former Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi criticized Team India for their loss against Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023 final. Afridi, speaking on a Pakistani TV channel, Samaa TV, stated that overconfidence was the downfall of Rohit Sharma’s side in the tournament. He emphasized that after winning 10 consecutive matches, the team’s overconfidence became excessive.

“Aap continue game jeete ja rahe ho toh overconfidence bhi zyada ho jati hai. Toh woh cheez aapko marwah deti hai,” Afridi said on Samaa TV.

In the match, India managed to score only 240 runs in 50 overs. Despite a challenging batting surface, skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul contributed important knocks. Mitchell Starc was the standout bowler for Australia, taking three wickets. Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood also bowled well, claiming two wickets each.

During Australia’s chase, India had the Aussies struggling at 47/3. However, impressive innings from Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne led Australia to a comfortable six-wicket victory. Head scored 137 runs, while Labuschagne contributed 58 runs.

Following the World Cup, both teams will now face each other in a five-match T20I series, which is set to begin on Thursday in Visakhapatnam.
