Terrifying Encounter: California Runner’s Life Hangs in the Balance as Mama Bear Charges

A runner in Sierra Madre, California had a terrifying encounter with a mother bear and her two cubs while on a hiking trail. The incident was captured on video on November 8th. The runner described the moment, saying, “Went trail running and turned a blind corner to find a mother bear’s head about 5 inches from my waist and her cubs a few feet behind her.”

The video starts with the mother bear charging towards the runner on the dusty trail. In a quick response, the runner backs away and begins roaring at the bear, attempting to scare it away along with the cubs. The runner’s efforts seem to work as the bear and cubs retreat momentarily.

However, as the runner turns a corner on the trail, she realizes that the bears are still following her. The mother bear even peeks her head around the bend to keep an eye on the runner. Determined to protect herself, the runner continues to back away while roaring and blowing a whistle. Unfortunately, at least one of the cubs continues to follow closely behind its mother.

Luckily, the runner encounters another hiker on the trail who assists her in diverting the bears onto a different path, separate from the one the runner had intended to hike.
