Today’s Announcements: An Incredibly Vital Milestone

President Joe Biden has taken a significant step in preserving Alaska’s North Slope by safeguarding over 10 million acres from oil development. This decisive action has permanently banned drilling in vast portions of the region. Additionally, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland has canceled drilling leases that were previously authorized during the Trump administration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

While these new policies have been lauded by environmentalists, they have not escaped criticism. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has threatened to sue in opposition to the measures. On the other hand, some environmentalists argue that these protections are inadequate due to the administration’s earlier approval of the controversial ConocoPhillips Willow project. This project is projected to yield 576 million barrels of oil over the next three decades, raising concerns about its impact on the environment.

The North Slope of Alaska is a remote area that boasts an array of biodiversity, including polar bears, a thriving porcupine caribou herd of 200,000, at least 36 fish species, and over 400 plant species. Moreover, it holds immense cultural significance for the Gwich’in, Athabaskan, and Iñupiat people. The Gwich’in refer to the refuge’s coastal plain as “The Sacred Place Where Life Begins” and rely on the caribou herd for their sustenance, clothing, and spiritual connection to the land.

Recognizing the threats posed by drilling and climate change to these vibrant communities and their environment, the environmental group Protect the Arctic emphasizes the need for their protection.

The recent actions by the Biden administration have garnered praise from environmentalists. Chris Wood, president of the conservation group Trout Unlimited, commends the administration’s bold approach to land and water preservation, highlighting that conservation is a long-term endeavor. Jamie Williams, president of the Wilderness Society, expresses the significance of the announcements in safeguarding the Arctic Refuge, describing it as one of the last great wild landscapes in America.
