British Home Secretary James Cleverly is facing backlash for making inappropriate jokes about date rape. This comes just hours after he announced plans to crack down on the offense.
During a reception at the prime minister’s home on December 18, Cleverly reportedly joked about drugging his wife. He told women guests that the key to a long marriage was having a spouse who is “always mildly sedated so she can never realize there are better men out there.” He even suggested that a little bit of Rohypnol, the date rape drug, in her drink every night was not really illegal if it’s only a small amount.
Rohypnol, also known as a roofie, is a drug that can cause drowsiness, unconsciousness, and memory loss when crushed and put into someone’s drink without their knowledge.
Cleverly’s comments drew widespread criticism, especially considering that he had just announced plans to update legislation to make clear that drink spiking is illegal. He had referred to the practice as a “perverse” crime. Cleverly later apologized through a spokesperson, referring to his remarks as an “ironic joke.”
The incident occurred during a drinks reception at 10 Downing Street, where political journalists, political aides, ministers, and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak were present. Although conversations at such events are typically off the record, the Sunday Mirror decided to report on Cleverly’s comments due to his position and the subject matter.
Jemima Olchawski, the chief executive of the women’s rights group the Fawcett Society, called Cleverly’s remarks “sickening” and called for his resignation. She questioned how he could be trusted to address violence against women when he found drugging women to be a laughing matter.
Cleverly, who is 54 years old and has two children, had previously emphasized his commitment to tackling violence against women and girls as a personal priority.
Members of the opposition Labour Party also condemned Cleverly’s comments, describing them as “appalling.” Yvette Cooper, a Labour member of Parliament, questioned whether victims could trust Cleverly to take this crime seriously.
The government has pledged to clarify that drink spiking is a crime but has not gone as far as making it a specific offense. According to a Home Office report, police in England and Wales receive an average of 561 reports of spiking per month, with most incidents reported by women in bars and nightclubs.
