Forty-one workers who were trapped under a collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand are said to be holding up well and are being provided with a “second lifeline” until they can be rescued, according to officials. The rescue efforts are focused on a 2-km section of the tunnel where the concrete work has been completed. This section has electricity, water supply, and a new six-inch-diameter pipe that is being used to deliver cooked food, medicines, and other essentials to the trapped workers. The workers are being given food items like roti, subzi, khichdi, daliya, oranges, and bananas. They are also receiving T-shirts, undergarments, toothpaste, and soap. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has developed a communication system that allows rescuers to speak to the workers, who have reported that they are safe. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) is horizontally drilling from the Silkyara end of the tunnel, while other heavy industry firms are drilling from different sides. The collapse occurred on November 12 during construction work, and the area of entrapment is 8.5 meters in height and 2 km in length. The trapped workers are currently in a safe portion of the tunnel that has electricity and water supply.
