Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in Florida has been ordered by a jury to pay over $261 million to the subject of Netflix’s documentary “Take Care of Maya.” The family of Maya Kowalski claimed in a medical malpractice suit that the hospital’s actions had led to her mother’s suicide. The six-person jury found the medical center liable for all seven claims made by the family, including false imprisonment, negligence, and emotional distress causing death. Maya’s mother, Beata Kowalski, took her own life after being separated from Maya in the hospital and involuntarily hospitalized. The jury awarded the family $211 million in compensatory damages and an additional $50 million in punitive damages. Maya, now 17, cried openly upon hearing the verdict. The hospital’s lawyers argued that Maya was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, but the jury sided with the family. The hospital plans to appeal the verdict, claiming errors in the trial.
