Indian cricketer Virat Kohli was awarded the ‘Fielder of the Match’ accolade following India’s loss in the World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a video highlighting the team’s journey throughout the tournament, which lasted for one and a half months. India’s fielding coach T Dilip came up with various ways to make the award special, but it was a simple conversation that led to Kohli receiving the medal.
Kohli, known for his exceptional batting skills, displayed an equally impressive performance on the field. He enthusiastically cheered on every wicket and made daring efforts to prevent the ball from reaching the boundary.
Dilip praised Kohli for his on-field magic, stating, “During the course of the tournament, I believe we took some brilliant catches, but what I truly appreciated was the brotherhood we shared on the field. The way everyone supported each other and backed one another was outstanding. Our team has grown on the field, and today’s winner, Virat Kohli, has been a terrific player. He consistently sets high standards and performs magic every time he steps on the field. What’s even more inspiring is that his actions inspire many people.”
Dilip also delivered an inspirational speech to uplift the players, reminding them to be proud of their efforts despite ending up on the losing side. He expressed his gratitude towards every player in the team, acknowledging their commitment, intent, and energy during practice sessions.
In the match, India managed to score 240 runs in 50 overs. Skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul played crucial innings, but Mitchell Starc was the standout bowler for Australia, taking three wickets. Chasing a target of 241, India had Australia struggling at 47/3, but Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne’s knocks led Australia to a six-wicket victory.
The World Cup finalists will now face each other in a five-match T20I series, beginning on Thursday in Visakhapatnam.
