Xavi Simons Reports Being “Very Happy” in Leipzig, Not Focused on Next Season

Dutch winger Xavi Simons, currently on loan at Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), recently discussed his future in an interview with Kicker. Having been with PSG since 2019 and under contract until 2027, Simons is shining on loan in Leipzig and prefers to focus on the present rather than contemplate the next season.

“I am currently concentrating on Leipzig. I want to savor the moment, and that moment is Leipzig. We have crucial games ahead of us and then the European Championship in June,” stated Simons, an international since the 2022 World Cup. He is set to compete in the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid this Wednesday, following a 1-0 victory by the Merengues in the first leg.

Recognizing that his future will be a subject of negotiation between the two clubs, Simons prefers to let his performance on the field speak for itself. With a season tally of 8 goals and 12 assists, he expressed, “It’s not time yet to consider next year. After the season, all parties involved will sit down and discuss the situation. I am extremely content here.”

Leipzig’s leadership is equally pleased with Simons. Sporting director Rouven Schröder recently expressed to Sky Germany the club’s wish to retain the former La Masia player for another season: “Naturally, we would like to keep Xavi Simons for one more season. At season’s end, he’ll return to PSG and we’ll then have the chance to request a new loan.”

Simons’ impressive first half-season with Leipzig has not gone unnoticed by PSG’s Spanish coach, Luis Enrique. At a press conference last week, Enrique stated, “He’s a PSG player, so obviously we keep a close eye on him. I don’t want to say too much out of respect for Leipzig, but we are in touch.” This adds another dimension to PSG’s summer plans, especially in light of the impending departure of Kylian Mbappé.
