Japanese company Yamaha has unveiled concept renderings of an electric motorcycle with no handlebars. The Yamaha Motoroid 2 is designed to be self-balancing, with two rigid hand grips replacing the traditional handlebars. Speculation suggests that the motorcycle could potentially be riderless, able to drive itself around without human involvement. This could make it suitable for tasks such as delivering packages or responding to long-distance calls. However, Yamaha is unlikely to produce an electric motorcycle of this kind. Despite this, the fact that the company sees value in the concept is evident in the development of a second concept and a working prototype, which will be showcased at the Events Japan Mobility Show 2023. With the mixed reception of competitor Kawasaki’s electric motorcycle, more innovation, development, and futuristic concepts in the electric motorcycle industry would be welcomed. Yamaha already offers electric scooters with traditional handlebars and steering for consumers. Some commenters speculate that the riderless motorcycle is a tech research project and could potentially become an interesting oddity for wealthy individuals to purchase for recreational purposes. Others believe that the project is an opportunity to experiment with new technologies and engineering concepts that could eventually find their way into race or production bikes.
