Youngest Competitor in the Next Vendée Globe Launches an SOS

Violette Dorange, a 22-year-old sailor from Charente-Maritime, France, is preparing to embark on a significant milestone in her sailing career. She has qualified for the upcoming Vendée Globe, a prestigious solo sailing race around the world, scheduled to commence from Les Sables-d’Olonne on Sunday, November 10, 2024. This year’s race marks the tenth edition of this renowned event.

Having made a name for herself in the Mini-Transat and the Solitaire du Figaro, Violette Dorange has hit a significant roadblock: a shortfall in her budget. She admits, “I’m missing half the budget, or nearly 800,000 euros…” Despite being backed by a host of franchisees from the McDonald’s brand, among others, the youngest participant in the Vendée Globe is finding it challenging to attract new sponsors. She elaborates, “I spend 90% of my time there, it puts pressure on… I also have to train, follow weather training and ensure technical preparation. But I am hopeful and we have a lot of assets,”

Violette’s campaign, aptly named “Becoming,” seeks to provide support for young individuals from the Apprentis d’Auteuil foundation, an organization she proudly represents as their godmother. Her mentor, renowned skipper Jean Le Cam, expresses his unwavering faith in her, “Investing in Violette is a good deal. She has the will, the sincerity and an extraordinary experience for her age. She will get through it,” he confidently asserts. Violette Dorange, who acquired her vessel last year, benefits from the advice of the Finisterian. She eagerly anticipates the chance to set sail on what she describes as “one of the best drift boats in the fleet.” Her sights are set not just on participating, but on making a mark. “I’ve been dreaming of this adventure for 4 years… I’m not going to win but I’m aiming for the podium of the old boats,” she confidently predicts.
