A 43-year-old man in the United States has been taken into custody after allegedly brandishing a firearm at a 6-year-old boy over a Halloween candy bag. The incident occurred in New York on Saturday, as reported by NBC News. The suspect, Michael Yifan Wen, was apprehended and charged with menacing and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, according to a statement from Nassau County police.
The incident unfolded when a mother drove her daughter, two sons, and a nephew to a nearby residence to deliver a goody bag. The 10-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son rang the doorbell and left the Halloween treat bag on the porch for their friend. However, upon returning to the car, the girl mentioned that they might have gotten the address wrong. Consequently, they drove back to the house, where the boy went to retrieve the candy-filled bag from the porch.
It was at this moment that the suspect opened the door and aimed a handgun at the boy’s head, as reported by the news outlet. The Nassau County Police Department was promptly notified, leading to the arrest of the 43-year-old individual.
Mr. Wen’s attorney has stated that his client is innocent until proven guilty. The lawyer emphasized that these are merely allegations and urged the public to refrain from making premature judgments before all the facts are revealed.
ABC News has reported that the investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
This occurrence takes place against the backdrop of the United States grappling with the rampant and uncontrolled use of firearms nationwide, resulting in the deaths of numerous innocent civilians over the years. According to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a non-governmental organization that classifies a mass shooting as an event where four or more people are injured or killed, the country has already witnessed over 500 mass shootings this year.
