Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh will be fully secured within the next two years. He made this statement during the Border Security Force’s (BSF) 59th Raising Day celebrations in Hazaribag, Jharkhand.
Shah stated that the Narendra Modi government has already fenced and closed gaps in approximately 560 km of the India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders over the past nine years. Currently, work is being done to address gaps in the remaining 60 km.
The two borders in question, spanning 2,290 km of the India-Pakistan International Border and 4,096 km of the India-Bangladesh border, are characterized by challenging terrains such as rivers, mountains, and marshlands. Erecting fences in these areas is difficult, so the BSF and other agencies rely on technical gadgets to monitor and prevent infiltration.
Shah emphasized the importance of secure borders for a country’s development and prosperity. He praised the efforts of the BSF, stating that they have played a crucial role in India’s achievements, including the Chandrayaan mission, G20 Summit, and economic growth.
The home minister also recognized the BJP government’s consistent prioritization of border security, starting from the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He highlighted the integrated approach taken by Vajpayee’s government and the Modi government’s focus on security, development, democratic processes, infrastructure, and welfare measures for the local population residing in border areas.
Shah outlined the government’s achievements in strengthening border infrastructure, including the establishment of new border posts and observation towers, as well as improving connectivity and access to basic amenities for the personnel stationed at these posts.
In addition to border security, Shah discussed the progress made in combating Left Wing Extremism (LWE), stating that the country is close to eliminating this armed and violent movement carried out by Maoist cadres. He highlighted a significant decrease in Naxal violence, deaths, and the number of affected police stations over the past decade.
Shah expressed confidence in the government’s ability to eradicate LWE and praised the establishment of 199 new security force camps in LWE-affected areas.
Furthermore, he mentioned the successful efforts in tackling challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, LWE, and insurgency in the northeast. Shah commended the security forces for establishing their dominance in Jammu and Kashmir.
In conclusion, Shah affirmed his belief that India’s borders will be fully secure within the next two years, allowing the country to continue its progress and development.
