Broader Changes Reflect in Decision Outcome

The Afghan embassy in New Delhi has officially announced its permanent closure. In a statement released by the embassy, it cited persistent challenges from the Indian government as the reason for the decision. The embassy had earlier ceased operations on September 30, hoping that the Indian government’s stance would change to allow the mission to operate normally.

The embassy emphasized that the closure should not be seen as an internal conflict or a result of diplomats switching allegiance to the Taliban. Instead, it stated that the decision was a result of broader policy and interest changes. The embassy expressed its gratitude to the Afghan citizens in India for their understanding and support throughout its tenure.

Despite limited resources and power, the embassy claimed to have worked tirelessly for the betterment of the Afghan community in India, especially in the absence of a legitimate government in Kabul. However, the embassy noted a significant decline in the Afghan community over the past two years and three months, with many Afghan refugees, students, and traders leaving the country. The number of visas issued during this period has been very limited.

The embassy highlighted that it had exerted diplomatic pressure on those who failed to form an inclusive government in Afghanistan and denied girls the right to attend school. Currently, there are no diplomats from the Afghan Republic in India, as they have safely reached third countries. The only individuals present in India are diplomats affiliated with the Taliban, attending their regular online meetings.

The embassy has handed over the mission solely to the Indian government, which now has the responsibility to decide its fate. This includes the possibility of maintaining its closure or considering alternatives, such as handing it over to Taliban diplomats. The diplomats appointed by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan have officially concluded their responsibilities. The embassy expressed gratitude to the people of India for their support and assistance over the past 22 years and reiterated its commitment to serving the people of Afghanistan.

It is worth noting that the embassy had previously announced the closure of its operations on November 1, citing a lack of resources and the failure to meet Afghanistan’s interests by the Taliban regime. The embassy also criticized certain consulates that operate under the instructions and funding of Kabul, claiming they serve the interests of an “illegitimate regime.”
