Heavy rain continues to lash Chennai and nearby districts as Cyclone Michaung threatens to make landfall tomorrow, causing widespread flooding and chaos. The city is already grappling with inundated low-lying areas and residential parts, and civic body personnel are struggling to clear the stagnant water.
Disturbing videos circulating on social media depict heavily flooded streets and parked cars being swept away by the strong currents. Chennai is experiencing severe traffic jams, with Chrompet GST Road and Vadakarai Road in north Chennai particularly affected.
The overnight rainfall has been relentless, with Meenambakkam recording 196 mm and Nungambakkam receiving 154.3 mm in the 24-hour period leading up to 5:30 am this morning. In response to the dire situation, schools, colleges, and government offices in Chennai and three adjoining districts have been closed for the day. The state government has also urged private companies to allow their employees to work from home.
To assist those affected by the heavy rain, approximately 5,000 relief centers have been set up in coastal districts. Chief Minister MK Stalin has reviewed safety measures and is closely monitoring the situation.
