Danish Ali’s Expulsion from Party Sparks Controversy Surrounding Mahua Moitra

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Danish Ali staged a one-man protest outside Parliament in support of his expelled colleague, Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra. Moitra was expelled from the Lok Sabha after allegations surfaced that she had accepted bribes, including Rs 2 crore in cash, from a businessman. Ali, a vocal dissenting member of the Ethics Committee, held up a placard with the message “don’t turn the victim into the culprit” to demand justice for Moitra.

Ali expressed his frustration with the expulsion, questioning the lack of honor and decorum in Parliament. He referred to the actions of BJP Lok Sabha MP Ramesh Bidhuri, who had made communal slurs against Ali. Ali argued that decorum in Parliament had already died when Bidhuri made those comments.

Ali had been actively supporting Moitra within the Ethics Committee. He also raised concerns about procedural errors in the process leading to Moitra’s expulsion. Despite his objections, the committee’s report was presented before the Lok Sabha, and Moitra was expelled through a voice vote.

Moitra was denied the opportunity to speak in the House, leading her to criticize the Ethics Committee for breaking every rule. Ali’s placard, “don’t turn the victim into the culprit,” was a reference to his own experience of being accused after the slurs from Bidhuri. Ali had written a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, expressing his shock at the clubbing of his complaint against Bidhuri with the accusations against him.

After months of criticism, Bidhuri apologized for his remarks. However, Ali’s protest and support for Moitra continue, as he believes she was not given a fair opportunity to defend herself. Ali’s actions highlight the ongoing tensions and controversies within Indian politics and the need for justice and fairness in parliamentary proceedings.
