The rail line in Malmirata was inoperable for a significant period exceeding two months, following a severe rail accident that had occurred previously.
Situated in Sweden, the reasons behind the reoccurring derailment of the freight train in the northern part of the country are now being uncovered, with the assistance of the Swedish security police known as Säpo.
The incident in question occurred on a Saturday evening around 8 p.m. when a freight train derailed from the tracks in Malmirada, located between Kiiruna and Narvik, close to the Norwegian border.
This recent derailment marks the second rail accident to take place on this particular section of track during the winter season. The previous accident had occurred on the 17th of December.
In Kiirunan, the local police issued a statement indicating that a preliminary investigation into the derailment incident that took place on Saturday has been initiated. The investigation will consider the possibility of sabotage being a contributing factor to the accident.
The police have revealed that they are collaborating with the accident board and the Finnish Transport Agency in conducting the investigation. In addition, the Swedish newspaper, Today’s News Säpo is also participating in the investigative process.
As per the police statement, no suspects have been identified as of yet. The Swedish Accident Investigation Board has told the Swedish public broadcasting company SVT that there are no indications suggesting that the derailment was anything other than an accident.
SVT has reported that for the time being, all traffic on the affected route has been halted. According to Dagens Nyheter, the rail line at Malmirata was inoperable for a period exceeding two months following the previous accident, and the track was only reopened five days prior to the most recent derailment.
The Swedish state-owned mining company, LKAB, suffered a significant financial loss as a result of the extended interruption in the use of the rail line. The company reportedly lost SEK 6 billion, which equates to more than half a billion euros, as it was unable to deliver ore via the rail line to Narvik.
The police have also stated that they are continuing to investigate the derailment that took place in December. According to them, it is still too early to draw any conclusions as to whether there is a connection between the two incidents.
The police have indicated that the investigation process is likely to be time-consuming.
