Manipur’s Oldest Armed Group, UNLF, Reaches Historic Peace Agreement with Centre

Manipur’s oldest armed group, the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), has signed a historic peace agreement with the central government and the state government, according to Home Minister Amit Shah. This announcement comes after Chief Minister N Biren Singh confirmed that talks had been ongoing with the group, which has been engaged in a six-decade-long fight against Indian forces.

The UNLF, led by RK Meghen in the past, has been advocating for the sovereignty of Manipur and has considered the merger of the pre-Independence Manipur kingdom with India as illegal. Similar to other banned organizations in Manipur’s valley, such as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the UNLF has been engaged in a guerrilla war.

“The peace agreement signed today with the UNLF by the government of India and the government of Manipur marks the end of a six-decade-long armed movement,” stated Home Minister Amit Shah. He further emphasized that this agreement is a significant achievement in realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of inclusive development and providing a brighter future for the youth in Northeast India.

The signing of this tripartite peace agreement signifies a major milestone in bringing an end to the armed conflict in Manipur. It represents a step towards peace and stability in the region, which has long been affected by violence and unrest. With this agreement, hopes are high that the grievances of the UNLF and other armed groups will be addressed through peaceful means, paving the way for progress and prosperity in Manipur.
