Migrant Families Reject New York City Shelter, Opting to Leave on Bus

Several migrant families with children arrived at a newly-opened shelter at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, only to quickly re-enter a bus and express their dissatisfaction with the accommodations. City Hall confirmed that some families did not want to settle at the shelter, but there were no alternative options available if they declined. Video footage captured Assemblywoman Jamie Williams witnessing migrant families returning to the bus with their belongings after seeing the facilities. The city worker present did not provide an explanation for why migrants were not being housed at the site. Williams expressed her concern, calling the situation inhumane and urging workers to inform the mayor. Mayoral spokesperson Kayla Mamelak stated that the lack of space left few options for the migrants. Mayor Adams, who was expected to discuss the crisis with White House officials, had to return to the city due to an FBI raid on his campaign fundraiser’s home. The number of families that ultimately stayed at the shelter remains unclear. Unlike traditional family shelters, Floyd Bennett Field required migrants to live in communal pods without private rooms or kitchens. The mayor’s office did not comment on why the migrants were brought back to the bus. Williams and Councilmember Joann Ariola opposed the use of Floyd Bennett Field as a shelter, citing its designation as a floodplain. Ariola has filed a lawsuit against the city and state, seeking to shut down the site, claiming that it lacks proper infrastructure and transportation access.
