Narayana Murthy’s Proposal for 3-Shift Work in Infrastructure Sector Ignites Controversy

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy has suggested implementing three-shift work for employees in the infrastructure sector, sparking a debate. Speaking at the Bengaluru Tech Summit, Murthy emphasized the need for the government to prioritize completing infrastructure projects. He specifically highlighted the importance of finishing the Electronics City Metro and expanding to other areas with many companies located there. Murthy argued that the industry should move beyond the traditional one-shift model and adopt a more ambitious approach.

Murthy pointed out that in nations with high aspirations, people often work on two shifts and even sometimes on three shifts. He suggested that India should follow a similar approach to surpass China’s growth. Murthy stressed that India has the potential to catch up with and even overtake China, but quick decision-making and removing hurdles for entrepreneurs are crucial.

The Infosys founder also mentioned that Bengaluru contributes a significant portion (35-37%) of India’s total software exports, which amounts to approximately $75 billion out of the $200 billion total exports from the country.

Murthy’s comments sparked a debate on social media, with some users supporting the idea of triple salaries for employees in the infrastructure sector. However, others criticized the suggestion, stating that salary structures should be followed rather than making irrelevant statements.

This is not the first time Murthy has sparked controversy with his remarks. Earlier, he had suggested that youngsters should work 70 hours a week if India wants to compete with economies that have made significant progress in recent decades.

Overall, Murthy’s proposal for three-shift work in the infrastructure sector has ignited a discussion on the potential benefits and challenges associated with such a system.
