Finnish telecom company Nokia has filed lawsuits against Amazon and HP in multiple jurisdictions, including the United States and India, for patent infringements related to video technologies. The company claims that Amazon’s Prime Video service and certain devices violate Nokia’s patents on video compression, content delivery, content recommendation, and hardware aspects. Nokia also stated that it has been in discussions with both Amazon and HP for several years but resorted to litigation as the companies failed to comply with established rules.
Apart from the United States and India, Nokia has also lodged suits against Amazon in Germany, Britain, and the EU’s patent court. Nokia’s Chief Licensing Officer, Arvin Patel, expressed the company’s preference for amicable agreements and open negotiations with companies that use their technology. Patel emphasized the increasing importance of the streaming market, which is estimated to reach $300 billion by 2027. However, Nokia criticized the discrepancy between technology developers and those who benefit the most from it.
In a separate development, Nokia recently announced plans to cut up to 14,000 jobs due to declining demand for its 5G equipment in North America. The company’s profits have been negatively impacted by this market shift.
