‘Playing for Juventus, Mistaken for a Lithuanian and Called Ivanas’

‘Playing for Juventus, Mistaken for a Lithuanian and Called Ivanas’

Three years ago, during the era of the corona virus, I found myself on a broader list. However, nothing of significance really happened. This is the first time I am being seriously considered for preparations and matches.

Ivan Vranes, who is 27 years old, was scheduled to make his debut with the Croatian national basketball team on Friday in Brest against France at 20:30. This marked the beginning of the qualifications for EuroBasket 2025. Vranes, a center from Zadar who stands at 207 centimeters, currently plays for Juventus, the Lithuanian Utena team. This season, he averages 15 points and six rebounds. Josip Sesar has also been keeping a close eye on Vranes’ performances.

Before the match, it will be decided who will play. I am naturally hoping to be included on the team. We are having an outstanding season in Lithuania, closely trailing Žalgiris and Rytas. Our coach is Oliver Kostić, who serves as Pešić’s assistant in the Serbian national team. I am comfortable with this style of play, I am consistent and I would say that this is the best period in my career after my time in Zadar, which holds a special place in my heart.

I have played in several countries including Belgium, Romania, and France. But can I say that I am playing in the country of basketball, and for Juventus?

Playing basketball in Lithuania for Juventus is a pleasure as the sport is revered in the country. They invest heavily in it and the arenas are often packed. On average, our games are 70 percent full throughout the season, says Ivanas Vranešas, the name Lithuanians have given me.

Yes, the Lithuanians have a unique way of referring to foreigners. I’ve even had many people tell me that I look like a native Lithuanian.

Nine years ago, our U-19 team won a silver medal. I was part of that team along with Luka Božić, who scored crucial free throws against the Americans.

Other players included Filipović, Kapusta, Badžim, and Žižić. Zubac, Bender, and Mazalin are now playing for the national team. I’ve known many of them for 15 years and have played multiple games with them. Filipović is my roommate. It was a team full of talent but unfortunately, some have stopped playing. I still remember those free throws.

At that time, I didn’t get many minutes on the court because of players like Zupac, Žižić, Bender and Arapović. However, I’m likely to get more playing time today against the strongest line under the basket of these qualifications. Yabusele, Poirier and Lessort might be the best players I will compete against.

It will be a big test for me if I get to play. I have played against Hayes from Žalgiris, but these players are probably a bit better.

As for my game, I always bring high energy and I believe I am technically proficient. I owe my skills to the Zadar school, my temperament, and my character. I started as a play, which has given me a good overview of the game. I try to utilize my speed to my advantage. I have received some offers, but we’ll see what happens. In the end, I hope to be a new and strong addition to the Croatian team and Sesar’s under the basket.
