New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged all nations to collaborate in reducing global emissions and has introduced a “green credit” initiative aimed at involving people in creating carbon sinks.
Speaking at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, PM Modi highlighted that India’s emissions are significantly lower compared to other nations with smaller populations. He stated, “India’s population accounts for 17% of the global population, but our carbon emissions only contribute 4%. We have made remarkable progress in achieving our Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets, reaching our non-fossil fuel targets nine years ahead of schedule.”
PM Modi emphasized the urgency to rectify the mistakes of the past century and urged every nation to sincerely work towards meeting their NDC targets. The Conference of Parties (COP) serves as the decision-making body that evaluates the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The Indian Environment Ministry has introduced two initiatives that demonstrate the country’s proactive approach to addressing climate change and building sustainability. These initiatives build upon the “Lifestyle for Environment” (LiFE) movement launched by PM Modi in 2021. The “green credit” initiative aims to promote environmentally friendly practices rooted in tradition and conservation, aligning with the principles of the LiFE concept.
PM Modi’s call for global collaboration and his introduction of the “green credit” initiative highlight India’s commitment to combatting climate change and fostering sustainable development.
