Rare Fish Makes Pakistani Fisherman Haji Baloch an Overnight Millionaire

A fisherman in Karachi, Pakistan, experienced a life-changing moment when he became a millionaire overnight by auctioning a rare fish with medicinal properties. Haji Baloch, residing in the impoverished Ibrahim Hyderi fishing village, along with his workers, caught the fish known as the golden fish or “Sowa” from the Arabian Sea on Monday.

According to Mubarak Khan of the Pakistan Fishermen Folk Forum, the entire catch was sold for approximately 70 million rupees at the Karachi harbor on Friday morning during the fishermen’s auction. The Sowa fish is highly valued due to its unique healing and medicinal properties found in substances extracted from its belly. Additionally, a thread-like substance from the fish is used in surgical procedures.

Baloch mentioned that each fish fetched around 7 million rupees in the auction. Weighing between 20 to 40 kilograms and reaching lengths of up to 1.5 meters, the Sowa fish is in high demand in East Asian countries. Furthermore, it holds cultural and traditional significance, being used in traditional medicines and local cuisine.

Haji Baloch expressed his intention to share his newfound wealth with his crew of seven people. It is worth noting that the fish only appears near the coast during the breeding season.
