An elderly store employee in Riverside County was brutally attacked last month, leaving him seriously injured and hospitalized. The victim’s family is now seeking justice for the violent assault that took place on October 27 outside Sun Valley Market and Liquor on Simpson Road in Winchester. The incident was captured on surveillance footage from a nearby business.
The footage shows the 68-year-old employee, Carlos Munguia, taking out the trash with a dolly in the store’s parking lot. Suddenly, a man approaches him and engages in conversation before sucker-punching Munguia and fleeing the scene. The impact of the punch causes Munguia to fall and strike his head on the ground, rendering him unconscious.
Munguia’s wife, who also works at the liquor store, became concerned when he did not return after taking out the trash. It was only when a customer assisted in bringing him back into the store that she discovered something was wrong. Initially, Munguia claimed he had fallen when questioned about his injuries, but his family only learned the truth after watching the surveillance footage.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, with speculation that the assailant may have been asking for money. However, Munguia’s daughter-in-law, Alma Romero, emphasized that he was known for his generosity and willingness to help those in need. She described the devastating impact of the assault on Munguia, who currently struggles with recognizing his loved ones and faces a long and uncertain road to recovery due to a fractured skull and brain bleeding.
The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Izack Ramirez from Winchester, was apprehended by deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities discovered evidence of the crime during a search of Ramirez’s home, leading to his arrest a day after the assault. Romero expressed the family’s desire for the suspect to remain in jail and face the consequences of his actions, emphasizing the unfairness of attacking an innocent elderly man.
In light of the mounting medical expenses, including surgeries and hospital stays, Munguia’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to aid in covering the costs. They hope to alleviate the financial burden associated with his recovery.
