American musician Taylor Swift has made an unprecedented mark in the history of music by being the first artist to win the Album of the Year Grammy Awards four times. Her most recent accolade was for her album Midnights.
This victory sets her apart from other music legends such as Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon who have each won the prestigious award three times.
In addition to this, Swift was also honored with the award for best pop album at the gala, which was held in Los Angeles. Winning the Album of the Year award for From Midnights contributed to her tally of 13 Grammy wins throughout her illustrious career.
Alongside her win, Swift also announced the release of her upcoming album. The 11th studio album titled The Tortured Poets Department is set to be released on April 19.
The evening was a significant celebration of female artists. Pop star Miley Cyrus, for instance, won her first-ever Grammy award.
Cyrus, making her debut as a Grammy winner, was first awarded the best pop solo performance award for her song Flowers, which later also won the award for the best single of the year.
Billie Eilish, another incredible female talent, won the best song Grammy for Barbie from the movie What Was I Made For?. She received the award alongside her brother and musician, Finneas O’Connell.
Victoria Monet, the Grammy winner for New Artist of the Year, was nominated in seven categories. She bagged two more awards apart from the rookie award.
SZA, the artist with the most nominations of the gala – nine in total, won in three categories.
Also, the rapper Michael, who won accolades at the gala with his album Killer Mike, emerged as a winner in three categories. However, his wins were marred by the news of his arrest at the gala venue.
The Los Angeles Police Department has yet to respond to AFP’s inquiries about the incident.
The Grammy Awards were held in California, where heavy rains and winds have caused a risk of flooding, even in downtown Los Angeles where the gala was celebrated.
