Toyota’s Crown crossover SUV set to make debut in L.A., company confirms

Toyota is set to reveal a new Crown crossover SUV at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show, expanding its already extensive SUV lineup. A teaser image provides a clear look at the back of the Crown, which bears a striking resemblance to the Crown Estate Type concept shown last year. This concept featured a more conventional SUV design, with matte black plastic cladding around the wheel arches and a contrasting roof. Unlike the current Crown sedan, it did not feature the controversial two-tone styling.

It is expected that the Crown SUV will offer the same powertrain options as the existing Crown models. The base option will likely be a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid, producing 236 horsepower and utilizing an e-CVT transmission to power all four wheels. An optional Hybrid Max powertrain may also be available, combining a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with larger electric motors and a six-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain delivers 340 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque.

Furthermore, Toyota may use this opportunity to introduce the previously announced plug-in hybrid powertrain for the Crown lineup. It is speculated that this system will be similar to the one used in the RX 450h+, a Lexus model that offers 304 horsepower and 37 miles of electric range.

More details about the new Crown SUV will be revealed during its official unveiling on November 14 at 10 p.m. Eastern time. For comprehensive coverage of the event, stay tuned to Autoblog.
