A remarkable encounter between a woman and a sea lion fighting an octopus was captured on video off the coast of Nanaimo, Canada. Lindsay Bryant, who frequently swims in the area, initially thought the sea lion was tangled in something. However, upon closer observation, she realized it was engaged in a fierce battle with an octopus. Bryant recorded the encounter and later shared the video on YouTube. The footage shows the sea lion vigorously throwing the octopus away before diving underwater to repeat the action. Seagulls were also seen circling above. Marine mammal researcher Andrew Trites explained that sea lions often eat octopuses but must be cautious to avoid suffocation. They bite down on one arm at a time and fling the octopus’s body to rip off an arm for swallowing. Bryant described the encounter as an “interesting swim” and speculated that it was a once-in-a-lifetime sighting. The video ends with the sea lion still swimming and thrashing, leaving the outcome of the fight unknown. Nanaimo is located on Vancouver Island, approximately 50 miles west of Vancouver and 200 miles northwest of Seattle.
