Two Additional House Lawmakers Opt Out of Reelection Bid, Announce Retirement

Two members of the House of Representatives, Democratic Rep. Anna Eshoo of California and Republican Rep. Bill Johnson of Ohio, have announced that they will not seek reelection. Eshoo, who has served in Congress for over 30 years, made the announcement in a video message, stating that she will not run for reelection in 2024. Meanwhile, Johnson revealed on X that he will not be seeking an 8th term in Congress and will instead accept an offer to lead Youngstown State University. He mentioned that he will continue serving in the House for a few more months, but it is unclear when he plans to leave.

Anna Eshoo, who has represented California’s 16th Congressional District since 1992, is known for her strong presence in Silicon Valley, a Democratic stronghold. She is a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee and had previously served on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors before entering Congress. Another California Democrat, Rep. Tony Cardenas, also announced on Monday that he will not seek reelection in 2024.

In her video message, Eshoo expressed her gratitude and announced her decision, stating, “I’m choosing this beautiful season of Thanksgiving to announce that I will not seek reelection – and I do so with a heart filled with unending gratitude.” House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries praised Eshoo’s decades of service, stating, “For more than three decades, Rep. Anna Eshoo has ably represented her constituents in the Bay Area during an era of tremendous growth and change.”

Eshoo affirmed her commitment to serving out her remaining time in Congress with vigor and unwavering dedication. The news article has been updated to include these additional details.
