Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib became emotional on the House floor as she defended her views on the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Tlaib is facing a second censure resolution for her criticism of Israel, with critics pointing to her use of the phrase “from the river to the sea” as a call to end Israel’s existence. Tlaib, however, claims it is an aspirational call for freedom and coexistence. During her speech, Tlaib emphasized that Palestinian people are not disposable and called for the recognition of their humanity. An attempt to table the censure resolution failed, and a final passage vote is expected to be held on Wednesday. Censures are rare, with only 25 House lawmakers having been censured in history. Tlaib’s first censure attempt was killed by House Democrats last week. She has faced criticism for blaming Israel for a hospital blast in Gaza and for calling for a cease-fire. Tlaib defended her criticism of the Israeli government and accused President Joe Biden of not representing all voices. The House is also planning to take up a revamped censure resolution by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, accusing Tlaib of inciting an illegal occupation at the United States Capitol Complex.
