Just a day before the launch, Hamilton has revealed to Mercedes’ Toto Wolff about his move to Ferrari.
Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton’s shift from Mercedes to Ferrari for the 2025 season was one of the most unexpected and significant news in the F1 world at the start of the year. The announcement came as a surprise to many when it was made public. Hamilton, in an interview with Autosport, citing the BBC Back at Base podcast, has now revealed that the negotiations and agreement were kept absolutely secret.
The news was first published on February 1. According to Autosport, Hamilton had informed Toto Wolff, the team manager of Mercedes, about the deal just a day before its public announcement.
Sky Sports was the first to report the news, but the teams only confirmed the transfer on the same day after discussing the publication with each other.
“I didn’t share it with anyone. Even my parents got to know about it on the day of the announcement. So, nobody knew,” said Hamilton.
Hamilton has been driving for Mercedes for 12 seasons, and after this season, he will be moving to Ferrari. The seven-time world champion’s contract with Ferrari is for multiple years.
Hamilton has previously stated that the team manager, Frederic Vasseur, played a crucial role in his decision to switch to Ferrari.
The Formula 1 season commences next weekend with the Bahrain GP. The Ferrari team features Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz as their drivers for the upcoming season.
Ferrari has been eagerly waiting for a world championship for a long time. The last Ferrari driver to become a world champion was Kimi Raikkonen in 2007.
