Santos Triumphs as Expulsion Vote Resolves in His Favor

The attempt to expel Representative George Santos, a Republican from New York, from Congress was unsuccessful on Wednesday. The Washington Post reported that 182 Republicans and 31 Democrats voted in favor of allowing him to remain, while 24 House Republicans and 155 Democrats voted to remove him. Additionally, 15 Democrats and 4 Republicans abstained from voting.

After the vote, Santos took to Twitter, now known as X, to share an image of himself wearing a gold crown. The image was accompanied by the phrase “If you come for me, you best not miss” and a message emphasizing that the victory belonged to due process, not him. Santos stated that the issue was never about him personally and that he would continue to fight for the rights of every citizen under the Constitution.

The motion to expel Santos was initiated by Representative Anthony D’Esposito, a fellow Republican from New York. This action came after Santos pleaded not guilty to 10 new federal charges, including conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, access device fraud, false statements to the Federal Election Commission, and falsifying records to obstruct the commission.

Nick LaLota, who spoke in favor of expelling Santos during the House floor session, expressed disappointment at the failure of the motion. LaLota believed that not removing Santos would set a harmful precedent and have severe consequences for the institution of Congress.
